Pet Dental Care: Essential Care for Your Pet

Pet Dental Care

Pet dental care is all too often overlooked. We wouldn’t wait to see the dentist for our own oral health, so why make your pet wait? Santa Monica Pet Medical Center provides complete dental services from professional cleaning to advanced procedures, ensuring your pet’s oral health is in top condition.

Our Dental Services

Our pet dental care includes a thorough oral exam and a professional cleaning to keep your pet's mouth healthy and prevent future issues. Each dental procedure is performed with anesthesia to ensure that we are thorough in removing plaque and tartar both above and below the patient's gumline. With pre-anesthetic testing and monitored care throughout, your pet will be in good hands. Keep in mind that the risks of poor dental health far outweigh the risks of anesthesia.

Every dental cleaning starts with a review of your pet’s overall health. From there, every pet will receive cleaning and polishing, with further services arranged if needed. Here’s a list of our services:

  • Ultrasonic scaling (under anesthesia)

  • Polishing, with fluoride

  • Extractions

  • Digital dental X-rays

  • At-home dental care advice and products

Risks of Untreated Dental Disease

Dental disease isn’t just about discomfort and “dog breath” — it can cause serious complications for your pet’s overall health. Pets can't tell us when they're uncomfortable, and all too often they hide their discomfort out of instinct. So, regular dental cleanings and oral exams can make a world of difference. If left untreated, dental disease can affect vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver. Watch out for these telling signs of dental disease:

  • Bad breath

  • Discolored teeth

  • Swollen, red gums

  • Disinterest in chew toys

  • Noticeable pain when eating

Home Care Advice

Typically, most dogs and cats need dental cleanings every 1 to 2 years depending on the level of oral hygiene at home. To maximize your pet’s oral health and lessen their trips to the clinic, be thorough with your at-home care.

  • Brush your pet’s teeth as regularly as you can. While every day is ideal, it might be troublesome or impossible. For difficult pets, we can discuss other options such as water additives or plaque-fighting chews.

  • Use only pet toothpaste and brushes for your pet’s teeth. Human toothpaste is not recommended. We offer pet toothpaste, gel, and toothbrushes in the house.
