For over 20 years SMPMC has been an AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited practice. As an AAHA-accredited animal hospital, we comply with over 900 discrete standards covering all aspects of our hospital. Currently fewer than 12% of US veterinary practices are AAHA accredited.
The American Animal Hospital Association was created in 1933 to increase veterinary practice standards and improve patient and client care. Accreditation is not mandatory; in fact, only 12-15% of all animal hospitals in the US and Canada are accredited today.
Santa Monica Pet Medical Center is proud to have achieved this distinction but more importantly, we're proud to better serve you. Practices seeking accreditation must have their entire staff on board to meet approximately 900 different veterinary standards. Furthermore, AAHA-accredited hospitals need to undergo inspection every three years to remain accredited.
Higher standards in veterinary medicine also means a higher standard of care for you and your pet. We adhere to AAHA guidelines in all areas including:
Surgery and anesthesia safety
Wellness exams and vaccines
Sterilization and hygienic practices
Patient monitoring
Handling and storage for medications
Keeping detailed patient records
Stress reduction
Pain management
...and more
